Interview with Kranes
1) What do you love and hate about being a writer?
I like this question. It’s unique, especially considering my book is about hatred, what fuels hatred and how to overcome it with love. Therefore, a question about love and hate seems very appropriate.
I like to end on the positive. So, let’s start with hate. Honestly, there is very little I hate about writing. I even like the struggle. Sometimes I can spend hours re-writing one paragraph or I’ll completely change a storyline. I probably should hate it when that happens. Instead, I get satisfaction from figuring out how to make it work, like when you were a kid and figured out a really hard math problem. If there is something I hate about writing, it’s the unknown. As a published author, now that my work is out there in the world, I don’t know if people will read it or like it. I don’t know what will happen with it. That’s the scariest part.
Now for the love. I just love writing. I like the feeling of my fingers pressing down on keys. I love conjuring stories on the screen. I could sit and write for hours and hours. I’ve always loved writing. My whole life, I filled endless notebooks with stories and poems. It took me a long time to realize though that meant I was truly a writer. My love of writing was always there but I didn’t realize it, like one of those stories where you finally notice your best friend has been the love of your life all along. I consider writing one of my great loves. Like all great loves, it makes me unbelievably happy and can also drive me unbelievably crazy. But, it’s still love.

2) What do you do when you have writers block?
To overcome writer’s block I just write, anything at all. For me, it’s kind of like when you can’t think of a word or an idea, so you do something else and then it pops into your head. Writing something completely different, even it if it something mundane like an email, clears my head and helps me move forward on my other project.
3) Can you give aspiring authors any advice?
When I think about this question I think about what I would tell myself if I could go back in time and give my younger self some advice. I’d say, don’t be afraid. Show your work to people. Feedback is critical and helps to shape you as a person and a writer.
4) How long did it take you to write the Travelers?
It took me about 10 years, sort of. I didn’t write the book over an entire decade. Actually, I wrote the first draft in just a few months. Then I shelved it for years. Occasionally, I’d take it out and brush off the metaphorical dust, edit it and then shelve it again. I probably spent about 7 years refusing to show it to anyone, even my family. Once I finally got over my crippling fear of criticism and rejection, the process accelerated. Eventually, I got lucky and found a publisher.
