By B.D. Rowe
“This isn’t a joke. How dare you. How dare you, knowing what I’ve been through.” – Sydney
Rowe: Sydney barely survived a car wreck that killed her boyfriend James, who was drunk behind the wheel, and she’s not happy when she finds her roommate Melanie, who’s also had one too many, driving wildly down the road, and nearly striking down a kid on his skateboard. Sydney and Melanie have a complicated relationship, with good days and bad, but in this scene Sydney blows up at her like never before.
“I wish Melanie was like you.” – Evan
Rowe: Evan is clearly torn between his girlfriend of one year, Melanie, and his friend from class, Sydney. Even though he’s about to celebrate his one year-anniversary, he clearly isn’t happy with how his relationship with Melanie is going, and increasingly has eyes for Sydney. The reader is left wondering in the early part of the book who he’s going to choose, and what’s going to happen with Sydney after the unthinkable happens.
“Hey, don’t talk about yourself like that. Sometimes... shit happens. Things that are always meant to happen, that we can't possibly stop, even if we try.” – Lukas
Rowe: Despite his moments of comic relief throughout the book, Lukas is an important character in the book because he represents the good in a person Sydney is constantly striving for. Here he proves that not only does he make her laugh, but he truly cares about her, and will do and say anything to remind Sydney that Melanie’s tragic death was an accident that she could have done nothing to prevent.
“I love you, you dumb shit!” – Sydney
Rowe: This is the moment in Crashing Into You when everything changes. Up until this point, Sydney and Evan have been close friends, with moments of flirtations. When Sydney finally gathers up the courage to tell Evan her feelings for him, she decides to profess her love not in a romantic or subtle way, but as a loud shout at the side of the cliff. He returns the affection, and the two finally share their first kiss. But that’s only the beginning…
