ARC Review: Dirty Little Secret by Jennifer Echols
Dirty Little Secret by Jennifer EcholsPublisher: MTV Books
Release Date: July 16, 2013
Book Format: ARC
Number of Pages: 288
My Rating: 3.5 out of 5
Synopsis: From the author of the “real page-turner” (Seventeen) Such a Rush comes an unforgettable new drama that follows friends-turned-lovers as they navigate the passions, heartbreaks, and intrigue of country music fame.
Bailey wasn’t always a wild child and the black sheep of her family. She used to play fiddle and tour the music circuit with her sister, Julie, who sang and played guitar. That ended when country music execs swooped in and signed Julie to a solo deal. Never mind that Julie and Bailey were a duet, or that Bailey was their songwriter. The music scouts wanted only Julie, and their parents were content to sit by and let her fulfill her dreams while Bailey’s were hushed away.
Bailey has tried to numb the pain and disappointment over what could have been. And as Julie’s debut album is set to hit the charts, her parents get fed up with Bailey’s antics and ship her off to granddad’s house in Nashville. Playing fiddle in washed-up tribute groups at the mall, Bailey meets Sam, a handsome and oh-so-persuasive guitarist with his own band. He knows Bailey’s fiddle playing is just the thing his band needs to break into the industry. But this life has broken Bailey’s heart once before. She isn’t sure she’s ready to let Sam take her there again…
My Review:
I received an ARC of Dirty Little Secret by Jennifer Echols, from Around the World ARC Tours and this is my honest review.
Dirty Little Secret is about an 18 year old named Bailey who has had a tough year. She started of playing fiddle along side of her sister until her sister was signed by a record company and she was basically forgotten about. Now by way of her parents she’s living with her grandfather and trying to stay under the radar so she does not get in her sisters spotlight.
The story started off with Bailey playing in little band things in the mall which was a little boring at first because I had no clue what was going on. We quickly found out some background on it like where she was living, why, and how she wasn’t supposed to have a job like this but she did anyways. Even with the small amount of info in the beginning I was still confused as to what exactly happened between her parents, her sister and her so for me the beginning was not very enjoyable .
This is the first book I’ve read by Echols so I obviously was not sure what I should expect, but I enjoyed the way she built her characters. Sam for instance when we first meet him he seems like a sweet guy but the father we get into the book and the more we get to know him he changes and not necessarily for the better. The reason I enjoyed this trait well half of me enjoyed it half of me hated it because when she first introduced Sam she made him lovable which drew us in then suddenly his character changed into someone you weren’t expecting and although you wanted to hate him you could not because you keep remembering what he was like in the beginning!
Another thing I really enjoyed was how Echols did such a great job with the little snippets of romance between Bailey and Sam. Every time they were together everything was just so sweet and gentle like how it was described made you almost feel like you were there witnessing it and I loved every second of it.
Even though I’m not much of a country music kind of person the author did a pretty good job with making the book enjoyable for everyone so I’m going to go ahead and give it a 3.5 out of 5 only because all though it was enjoyable I struggled with some parts of the book. But I am definitely willing to give Jennifer Echols another shot!

Strong Enough Tour: Character Interview
Strong Enough by Ellen Harger
Publisher: Ellen Harger
Release Date: February 25, 2013
Synopsis: Starting over is hard.
And sometimes, you have to burn a few bridges to do it.
Whitney Brown is average--average height, weight, and personality--but she wants to be someone new. To kick-start her rebirth, she wears formal mourning, a black veil and vintage dress, to a wedding in her hometown, Woods Cross, a community that treasures family values. Is it an attack on marriage or has she just gone bonkers?
Emboldened but lacking a plan, she forces her foot in the door of a radio station in Sundown. A small metropolis of nearly 150,000, Sundown is a notch of urban flair along the Midwest's Bible Belt.
Getting in proves to be the easy part and the anonymity of being a DJ suits her well. But off air (and in person), Whitney must stand up to Sadi, an angry feminist and the bane of her college years while an old friendship with her former roommate, Leah, devolves around a guy.
It's 2002 and the Midwest radio scene is changing. Just as Whitney hits her groove, the radio station undergoes its own identity crisis. But what rocks Whitney to her core is the moment the condom breaks. Her abstinence only background leaves her embarrassed and facing a difficult choice.

Ellen Harger was born at the Air Force Academy in Colorado. As a military brat, she moved often during her childhood--something she never resented and continued as an adult. The constant starting over influenced her first published novel, "Strong Enough."
At 14, her family settled in Missouri as civilians, permitting Ellen to attend one high school. She stayed in the Midwest to attend a small liberal arts college, studying creative writing and art. After 11 years, she moved to Boston. While there, she continued to study creative writing in Cambridge. Ever willing to explore new places, she moved next to the San Francisco Bay area. After 11 years away, and loving the symmetry, she returned to the Midwest to finish "Strong Enough." She has published a poem, "Guidelines," and released her novel as an e-book.

Character Interview: (Main Character Whitney Brown)
P: Do you like to read and if so what kind of books?
W: I mostly read liner notes and industry mags but when I read books, I go for mysteries. I love disappearing into a world totally unlike my own predictable routine. Don't get me wrong, I love my routine. But everyday is pretty well defined before I even get to work. I have schedules and listener demands. When I get to read for pure enjoyment, I want it to be a total escape. Plus, danger? Not really my cup of tea. I much prefer suspense to affect someone else. So much safer! LOL
P: What is it like being a DJ?
W: Mostly it's fun--I'm emmersed in music all day! What's not to love? But it can be taxing complying with data research and social trends. On air, it's the same groupings, the same cluster of musical genres. There's a lot of oversight and when accounting gets involved in, it can be as exciting as a teeth cleaning. However, I love doing research. For now, my biggest thrill is reading about a new artist or style and being the downleg of sharing something cutting edge. Like most of us, I'm influenced by others--I just get it sooner than the average listener. And I even get to pick what I think is most exciting. But someday, I hope to influence with my insight, my instinct. I'd love to be the first to share someone awesome with the world. I won't create the music but I'll promote it. I love that moment when you share something special with another human for the first time. It's like giving a gift!
P: Other than being a DJ what do you do in your free time?
W: I listen to music. LOL! I'm so sad. But seriously, music has become my life. When I'm home, I listen to CDs we'd never play on mainstream radio. And I love to go out and listen to local artists. I don't care if they band is only mediocre. They are doing something creative! See, it's an energy with locals or struggling artists. It's exciting to watch raw talent burst forth, but most have no expectation of making it big. They play music because it's alive in them and it's like breathing. I almost prefer that to the taint that success brings. But brilliant artists can be arrogant--they often deserve it and frankly, they'll lose their throne to new artists or their own self-absorption. It's an ever changing entity and I love its fickleness.
One thing I do, though, is exercise. I started it to lose weight, you know? But I quit worrying about speed and distance. I get out now to move and see my neighborhood. It's another form of escape, I suppose, because it's quiet. I guess it lets me ground myself because I often don't even take my MP3 player!
Does drinking count as an activity? That's the last thing I'll add. I really do enjoy going out with friends and having a beer. But usually, that involves dancing or live music.
**Speed Round**
4. Chocolate or Vanilla? Chocolate
5. Rain or Shine? Rain. It's nature's rhythm.

The Lay Death Tour: Guest Blog + Giveaway
Lay Death at Her Door by Elizabeth Buhmann
Synopsis: Twenty years ago, Kate Cranbrook’s eyewitness testimony sent the wrong man to prison for rape and murder. When new evidence exonerates him, Kate says that in the darkness and confusion, she must have mistaken her attacker’s identity.
She is lying.
Did I mind? Not at all. I was one of those kids who invents imaginary friends. I had four: Inka, Dinka, Encore and Carrot. Inka and Dinka were twins. Encore and Carrot fought with each other a lot.
In the evenings, at the dinner table, when my parents and siblings told each other about the day, I would pipe up with a blow-by-blow of what my imaginary posse had been up to.
I’m still doing the same thing, but now I call it being a writer. I dream up characters, put them in situations, and spend my time working out what happens.
I love murder mysteries, so of course that’s what I set out to write for my first book. Lay Death at Her Door is a rather dark story. I started with the idea of a woman—I named her Kate—who lied on the stand and sent an innocent man to prison for rape and murder.
Why would anyone do such a terrible thing? I had an idea for a situation that Kate got herself into. We don’t know at the beginning of the book exactly what she did—it’s part of the mystery. We know that a man was killed and that Kate was raped as a twenty-year-old. We know she felt she had to conceal the truth for her own protection.
When the story opens, it’s twenty years later, Kate is in her forties, and the man she accused has just been exonerated by new evidence. From there, bit by bit, her carefully constructed life begins to unravel until in the end, we understand everything that happened in the past.
What’s scary and fascinating to me about Kate’s story is the fact that she made mistakes when she was young, and these mistakes ended up coloring her whole life.
One reckless, heedless act—one wrong move—and her life was on a course to disaster, and she didn’t even know it. Makes me shudder—in a way that’s fun, as long as it’s not real.

The Life of Imagination
When I was very young, my family lived way out in the country in southern France. It was a beautiful place, but also very isolated. There were no other children, and although I had a brother and sister, they were a lot older than me.Did I mind? Not at all. I was one of those kids who invents imaginary friends. Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Publisher: Entangled Teen Publishing
Release Date: May 8, 2012
Book Format: Paperback
Number of Pages: 335
Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars
Synopsis: Starting over sucks.
When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring.... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.
And then he opened his mouth.
Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something...unexpected happens.
The hot alien living next door marks me.
You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon's touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.
If I don't kill him first, that is.

My Review:
I bought Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout on my own, and this is my honest review.
Lets start with the reason why I decided to pick this book up. So many people in the blog world have read and reviewed Armentrout’s books and I literarily have not heard one ill word towards her work. So with that I grabbed Obsidian off ofAmazon the second I had the chance, and it may or may not have sat on my shelf for awhile but the point is I read it and I have to say the hype about this is very accurate.
I love to read but something I love more, is finding new things while reading. Like Aliens! This is the first book I have ever read that had to do with Aliens, which is pretty cool. High school student Katy moves to West Virginia with her mother after her dad dies, and is forced to make friends she never thought though that these friends were not human. Makes you want to go grab the book right now doesn’t it? I encourage you to go do it!
The first thing I noticed about this book that I loved was that the main character Kat, is a book blogger just like me! I can’t even begin to explain how excited that made me, and then seeing posts that I do every week as a book blogger mentioned in this book, I couldn’t get enough of it! I thought it was a great tie into the book world, and I’m sure it gives other book bloggers/reviewers a thrill too.
I honestly never thought that I would ever even attempt to read a book about aliens, but you know when those aliens are as hot as Daemon Black you just have to give them a chance. Granted Daemon is a major ass for a majority of the book, when I read the back of the book and it said how much of a jerk he was I figured okay he is a bad boy which I like. But no he isn’t even a dark bad boy he’s just plain old mean! But very attractive.
Back to the whole alien thing, when I picked it up I was trying to think about what they would look like outside of their human forms, and I honestly could not figure out what they would look like. But I really liked their alien form just pretty shimmering light its almost relaxing!
Can I just say how much I loved Dee! She was so bubbly and bright you just could not be in a bad mood while her character was in the pages, even when Daemon was being rude if she was in the scene you could not help but smile. She was most definitely my favorite character. I can strongly say this book gets a full 5 out of 5 stars!

Yellow Socks and Blood Spots Tour: Character Interview
Yellow Socks and Blood Spots by Bailey J. Thompson
Synopsis: Two lines means pregnant, and pregnant is the very last thing seventeen-year-old Isabelle wants to be. She’s just beginning her senior year, she’s rekindling the respectable relationship she once had with her family and she’s finally fallen in love.
Her boyfriend, Jason, wants an abortion, while Isabelle wants to give her baby a chance at life, whether that means adoption or raising her baby herself. Her situation raises a question of values, beliefs, rights, societal expectations and personal opinions, and as Isabelle’s friends and family discover the news, they seem to think that only they know what’s best for her and her baby. Within two weeks of finding out about their beautiful disaster, Isabelle and Jason have to come to a mutual agreement and make a life or death decision.
Meet The Author:
Bailey J Thompson is a teenage author that resides in Barrie, Ontario, Canada. She has been storytelling since the moment she could talk, and has since developed passions for creative writing, photography, nature and the environment. Yellow Socks and Blood Spots is her debut novel.
Character Interview:
Note: This is an interview with the two main characters in the book, Isabelle and Jason! I hope you love it!
Questions for Isabelle:
P: Teenage pregnancy definitely isn't easy. What is it like so far for you?
I: Weird. I've seen it happen to so many of my classmates but I never really thought it would happen to me. Jason doesn't want me to tell anybody, so I haven't had anybody to talk to about it, really. I told my friend Whitney, but she's determined to prove it's just a fluke. But I know it's true... It's the kind of thing that you just know. I'm not really sure how to feel. In a way, I'm scared, but at the same time, I'm kind of excited.
P: What are your parents thinking about it?
I: They're so much more supportive than I thought they would be! My mom was adopted as a baby, and my father's mother was 18 when she had him. They've both been exposed to two of the possible outcomes, and they're completely on my side no matter what I choose. They even said I could stay at their house if I need to raise my baby there for a while at first. I expected them to blow up, or freak out... but they were pretty calm about it.
P: Do you think you and Jason will make it?
I: Yeah! Totally. He's such a great person and I love him so much. He loves me too and we're in this together. I think he's behind me no matter what we decide.
Questions for Jason:
P: Your girlfriend is pregnant what is going through your head right now about the pregnancy?
J: What are we going to do? What are we going to do? I really don't want a kid right now, I mean, I love kids but not at 17. and my Dad is pretty much going to blow up when he finds out... if he finds out. If I can avoid telling him, I will. I'm really not ready for a baby. I love Isabelle so much and I want to have a family with her one day, but not now.
P: Do you plan to be supportive?
J: Yeah. I'm kind of scared she's going to leave me to have the baby or something. She can get to extremes sometimes, she's a little dramatic too. I really want what's best for both of us though. I don't think having a baby is what is best. She's a really smart girl, she's got a bright future ahead of her and a baby would really be a roadblock. I'm here for her, but I really am going to push what I believe is right for both of us.
P: Do you think you and Isabelle will make it?
J: I once told her that if anyone breaks up the relationship, it will be her. I mean that. I'm not going anywhere.
I have to say this was the best interview I have given so far! I hope you all enjoyed it, and thanks for stopping by today :)
