What I'm Currently Reading #2

 

Good Afternoon Comfort Readers! I'm back again to share my huge currently reading pile in hopes to making it much smaller. Here are a couple that are on my list and what I plan to do with them!

1) Strange Sweet Song by Adi Rule 

This was an impulse buy. I borrowed it from work to check it out because the author was coming to do a signing. I didn't finish by the time she arrived and so I bought it just because I was so excited and
she was really sweet. I got a good chunk into the book, but I think I might start all over since its been so long I really want to get back into the story on my own terms.

2) My Not so Super Sweet Life by Rachel Harris

So this was also requested on impulse. Rachel Harris is one of the only authors that I've read more than 2 or 3 books written by them so I definitely consider her one of my favorite authors, and the only reason why I didn't finish this is because it is an e-book and my e-reader broke :( I'm hoping to either get a physical copy or to start over on my phone soon!

3) Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson 

This is a book that was sent to me before it came out in stores so I believe it was an ARC or maybe even a finished copy right before it came out. Either way, the book is written in verse and I'm not a huge fan of verse so even though it was a good book when I started it didn't hold my interest that much so this is one I probably wont return to.

4) A Sister to Honor by Lucy Ferriss 

I really enjoyed this book while I was reading it and I was almost finished BUT I lost it! So I obviously don't want to just start over since I was almost done and I could fix that if I was keeping track of what page I was on with goodreads but I was stupid and didn't so unless I can find this missing book I probably won't be finishing it :(

 

5) The Hero of Blind Pig Island and other stories by Jimmy Olsen

This was a review book of short stories set on an Island. I got about halfway through some of the stories were really good some were bland but either way I was planning on finishing it but I've also lost this since my move back home so hopefully I can find it soon because it was a perfect beachy read!

My Review:

I bought this book with my own money and this is my honest review.

To start off, I want to mention how popular and talked about Ruth Ware’s books have been so I was a little skeptical about reading them based on the hype alone, but since they seemed like books that were right up my alley I decided to give them a try.

In a dark, dark wood follows Leonora who gets invited to a friends bachelorette weekend whom she hasn’t talked to in 10 years. The weekend put together by an unstable women starts off rocking and goes downhill from there. The novel includes many secrets and even a little blood which makes things even more interesting.

I am normally a slow reader, but Ware’s first novel took me no time to read at all. I find that ever since taking classes on writing in college my opinions on books have changed. I read books a lot more critically I find and that makes reading in some ways that much more enjoyable. Something that really stood out to me while reading this was the characters. To many writers write books in which characters don’t stand out therefore it ends up way to hard to tell them apart. Each and every person in this book had their very own personality and I have zero trouble telling them apart. Nina was so sassy, Tom was a guy but had a kick to his personality, Nora was way too quiet and an introvert, Flo was crazy and Clare was fake. It’s not every day I could safely give a list of characters and their personalities easily so that made me love this book that much more.

In a dark, dark wood reminded me a lot of And then there were none by Agatha Christie just because it was 6 people in a house but it had its own features which made it stand out. By the looks of the cover I never would have guessed it had anything to do with a bachelorette party and it was written so well that I had no idea what was coming. Being able to read a book and be completely clueless as to what is about to happen is the best in a novel.

The writing was fantastic, I didn’t feel like I had to keep stopping to re-read because of the writing, it didn’t feel too young or choppy. It flowed really well and kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I was able to focus on this book perfectly while sitting by the side of a very chaotic pool only because the story and writing kept me so hooked.

I would recommend this novel to anyone looking to read something dark in which they wont expect what happens in the slightest. This is for anybody who likes a mystery and enjoys trying to put two and two together the entire time and to enjoy the story along the way as well. Definite 5 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this book with my own money, and this is my honest review.

Nexis by A.L. Davroe follows main character Ellani on her quest to understand her late father's virtual reality video game as well as bringing meaning back to her life after an accident that changes her life forever. In the game she alters herself to help guide her on that quest. During her time in the game she meets Guster with whom is also essential to her game.

I don’t read dystopian novels very much but I find that when I do I LOVE them with that said and after reading the first book in this duology I believe I am going to start reading these kinds of books much more. This world takes place long after the original America has gone. The first date in the book reads June 13, 231. There were so many interesting quirks this world had that I really enjoyed. For example, outside was not liveable anymore, so those who were wealthy enough to afford it were able to stay inside to avoid becoming sick with radiation or anything else being spread about.

I also enjoyed the fact that robots were used frequently in different ways. Some families were using robots as extra family members that act both as family and as nannies. Some were strictly nannies or maids. These citizens were also known for changing their looks and appearances often with things called alterations and modifications. Those can be anything from changing their hair color to getting cheek implants. Very few people in this world are born natural without any changes. Most parents choose what they want their children to look like before they are even born and some allow their children to change themselves whenever they want after birth but very few are born and kept as naturals. Because of this, those who are naturals including Ellani are seen as lesser than everyone else.

I was almost immediately pulled into the story even only after reading a few chapters, I immediately loved Ellani and Guster not only for their unique relationship but as separate characters as well. Many novels include a love at first sight factor and although I can see that in some ways in this novel but at the same time Ellani and Guster really got to know each other before anything of that nature came about.

My favorite aspect of this novel was the time spent in the video game. Learning about their interesting and certainly different world comes in at a close second, but nothing was better than learning all of the cool things they could do in the video game. I also loved the fact that the video game was supposed to be portraying how America actually is now, and Ellani got to experience all of that.

What I'm Currently Reading #1

For along time now I have had a huge currently reading list on goodreads. Some of them I'm actually reading right now, some I started over a year ago and just have yet to go back to. Do you guys have any books on your TBR that you've started and haven't gone back to?

Anyways, I'm going to go down the list (in four parts across four weeks considering their are 20 books on the list) within this post and talk about each one. Including why I picked it up, why I haven't finished and if I think I'm going to. Let me know if you have had similar situations with any of these books or even if you have read and loved them!

1) Fatal Vision by Joe McGinnis 
I picked this one up for a few reasons:
1. I LOVE True Crime! (If any of you love it and could leave recommendations that would be great! I'm always looking for new titles to read)
2. My mom read this when she was my age and she really enjoyed it so I thought I would give it a try given the genre.
So in the end, I enjoyed this while reading but I think I started school at the same time I was getting into the trial part of the book and it shut me down a bit. But I do plan on getting back to it.

2) That Night by Chevy Stevens
I picked this up because I have an ARC and I wanted to read it before it came out. I loved what I read, but I didn't finish it before it came out so I put it down to finish other things. Again, I do plan on picking this back up eventually because I didn't get far into it and I have heard amazing things about this author.

3) College 101 by Julie Zeilenger
I picked this up a LONG time ago the summer before I started college. Now, I am a senior in college on my way to graduation in May of 2018 and I think reading this now would be kind of pointless. But I am thinking about applying and attending graduate school and if I do I might consider this again to get a fresh pair of eyes and start when the time for that comes.

4) Red Ink by Julie Mayhew
I picked this one up because I requested it for review when a seasonal list of ARCS from candlewick came out. I honestly cannot for the life of me remember what this was even about. Not because it was bad but because it's been so long. I do plan on picking this back up eventually, it's just not on the top of my list.











5) Kardashian Konfidential by Kardashians
I picked this up because at the time I was really into the Kardashians and I thought having their book was the coolest thing! I'll probably read through this some more but won't religiously read it cover to cover.

What I'm Up too + Questions for you!

Hey, Comfort Readers! I've been thinking lately and I've decided that I miss blogging so much. I never officially stopped but with college, and work I have been ridiculously busy. I get all hyped up and think I'm going to get back into this full force and just get discouraged and stop when I can't. But I feel especially motivated right now on this Friday night or Monday morning when you guys will be reading this, and so I've decided to come back to my first love and give it another shot. This time around though, I want to try things differently and I want you guys to let me know what you think.


I would really like to incorporate more than just books. Now before you all go crazy let me start by saying that I still love books way more than I love doing anything else. BUT I also am a huge fan of movies especially horror movies and I want to be able to incorporate that as well. At some point, I wish to have a page link that once you click on brings you to a customized looking horror movie page that branches off of this blog but for now everything is going to look a little rough around the ages until I can fund everything.


So what do you guys think? I'm sorry about the long bulky paragraphs but I am a writer and lots of words are just what I do. So I need one thing from you guys; I have a few questions for more seasoned and experienced bloggers. What do you guys do when you get into blogging slumps? How do you get fresh content other than the normal reviews? How do you get more following? I'm not so crazy about having a million followers, but I do want to be able to have insightful conversations with those who are checking out my content and as of now I'm not getting that so please do let me know your answers to those questions!
