Leap of Faith by Jamie Blair
Publisher: Simon & Schuster BFYR
Release Date: September 3, 2013
Genre: Contemporary, Young Adult
Synopsis: Can true love be built on lies? A teen on the run seeks relief and redemption in this gripping, romantic read.

Leah Kurtz has finally found a place to call home, a town where she and baby Addy can live in peace, far from the drug-infested place she grew up. Chris is one of the best parts of her new life, the only person who’s ever made her feel safe. And now that she’s found him, there’s no way she can tell the truth:

Her real name is Faith, not Leah. She’s seventeen, not nineteen. And the baby isn’t hers—Faith kidnapped her.

Faith’s history catches up with her when a cop starts asking questions and Chris’s aunt spots her picture in the newspaper. She knows it’s time to run again, but if Faith leaves, she’ll lose Chris. If Chris is in love with a lie, though, did Faith ever really have him in the first place?
Purchase The Book:

Jamie Blair spent most of her teen years choreographing moves for her dance team routines, kissing boys on the couch after her mom went to bed, and pondering the mood enhancement qualities of Lemon Heads when consumed with Diet Coke. Writing under Kelli Maine, she’s the USA Today bestselling author of Taken. Leap of Faith is her debut New Adult novel.

Excerpt:
After a few minutes of Chris flipping through the channels with the remote while we eat, I have to break the silence again.  “How was work?  Where do you work, anyway?”
“I have a glamorous job roofing houses for RJ Roofing.”  He leans back and rubs his stomach.  “I’ve been there a couple of years.  It’s not bad.  They’re good people to work for.”
“That sounds horrible to me.”
He lifts one eyebrow.
“I’m terrified of heights.  I couldn’t ever go up on a roof.  Plus it has to be about a hundred and fifty degrees up there.”
He chuckles.  “It is.  And you come home covered in tar and dirt.  But the pay’s good.”
“How long have you played the guitar?”  I look down at my hands.
I can’t stop asking questions.
I hate that he won’t ask me his own questions even if I won’t answer them anyway.
He stretches both arms over his head and yawns.  “About five years.”
I nod and tuck my hair back again.
“Here.”  He reaches into his pocket and shoots me with a rubber band.  “For your hair.  It’s not going to stay behind your ears.”  His smile’s easy.
Tonight, his eyes match his dark blue shirt.  I like his chin length hair down.  It makes the angles of his face softer.  Faint stubble has grown on his chin.  No wonder I’m obsessed with him.  He’s hot.
My eyes make their way back to his, and I can tell he knows what I’m thinking.  I shift to peer at the TV, feeling my pulse race.  I ball my hair on top of my head and wrap the rubber band around it.
“Faith,” he mumbles.
I jerk around.  “What did you say?”
“The tattoo on the back of your neck, it says hope and faith.”
I reach around with my hand, covering my tattoo.  It’s a banner inside angel wings with our names on it.  Hope and Faith.  My sister and I got them last summer.  It took me forever and five days to talk her into it.  She got hers as a tramp stamp, thinking she could hide it.  More people have seen hers than mine since her track pants sit low on her hips.
“Yeah.”  I swallow my fight or flight instinct.  “Do you have any tattoos?”
In one swift movement, he whips off his t-shirt.  There, in the middle of his tan chest, beside a smear of paint, is a cross with two dates inscribed on it.  One across, one down.  Its intricate design has my fingers itching to touch.  Instead, I crawl on my knees around the table to get a closer look.

To Know Me

Summary from Goodreads:
To know me is to die...

Desperate to earn her diploma and salvage something of her life, she transfers schools when people get too close. After switching to Woodson Prep with only two months to go until graduation, Mae keeps her goals in sight. About the Author
I am a former elementary school teacher and currently run an elementary library which is the perfect job for my interests.

In October 2010 I  had an essay published in Chicken Soup for the Soul:  Devotional Stories For Mothers.   Another essay will be published in November 2013 in Chicken Soup for the Soul: Just Us Girls.

In 2012 my debut picture book was released by Bronze Man Books. Am I Like My Daddy? follows the journey of a child who seeks to learn if she is anything like the dad who died when she was young.

My middle grade novel, Confessions of a Corn Kid, as well a YA short story trilogy, The Lexie and Rhett Chronicles, and To Know Me, were released direct to kindle in 2013.

I am a great eavesdropper and person profiler which proves a fabulous advantage for a writer. As my favorite shirt says, Be careful or you’ll end up in my novel.

Excerpt:
“Is this for me?” I ask as Ty stands in the center of the clearing with a yellow rose in one hand.
“No. It’s for that grandma who’ll be passing this area in about ten minutes. I’m just practicing my delivery.” He’s so cute when he’s being sarcastic. I take the rose. In an instant I am shocked back to the day of Laura’s funeral. Everyone in her sixth grade glass brought roses to the cemetery to layupon her grave, yellow ones, her favorite color. “Why aren’t you smiling?” Ty asks. “Did I do something wrong?”
“N…no.”
“Your hand is shaking,” he says coming over to my side. “Sit down.” He points to the picnic table. “Mae, if you don’t tell me anything I won’t ever be able to help you. I want to help you. I know what it’s like to need help. There’s a lot you don’t know about me, too. And I’m willing to tell you. It’s weird because I hardly know anything about you, but I feel like we’re a lot alike.”
“We’re nothing alike,” I say. I want to tell him. But if I do?Then what? He won’t understand. No one does.
“Is yellow not a good color for brunettes?” he jokes. I can’t help but smile. He takes the rose, breaks off the stem, and tucks it behind my ear. He leans in to smell the rose and kisses my cheek. Only the crunching of sticks from the older couple on the path stops him from reaching my lips.

Since the age of ten, Mia has lived under the iron fist of the fundamentalist preacher who lured her mother away to join his fanatical family of followers. Now sixteen, Mia dreams of slipping away from the armed guards who keep the faithful in, and the curious out. Meet The Author:
Hi. I’m Elisa. I like cheese and reading and TV show marathons. Writing is scary, but not as scary as, say, Civil War amputations. I’m an Aquarius. Uh… let’s see… I’m not very good at writing my own biography. Or autobiography. I guess this is reading more like a slightly incoherent personal ad.

My Review:

Escape From Eden is a type of dystopian I would say about a girl named Mia who is finally starting to realize that the community she lives in is not what everybody thinks it is. So along with a boy Gabriel whom is knew to the community they start working on a way to get themselves out, but as always it isn’t that easy. When I was contacted by the publisher to read this one I was pretty excited because this publishing company never steers me the wrong way, and this book was definitely a home run for me.

I liked Mia from the beginning because I knew she was not going to be one of those stupid naive girls who are just like oh everything will be okay in the end. Nope she was very real and I loved watching her character grow stronger throughout the book. She was a very sweet girl to everyone which I enjoyed because the life she was living I feel like I would have a hard time being nice let alone extra sweet to the people around me.

The plot was really very interesting, when you read the synopsis you’re like ehh, evil dictator brain washes his minions to think hes all that even though they’re really living awful lives thats all pretty cliche. But Nader did a very nice job making the story unique and I never felt bored with it once, every time I picked up the book I was excited to find out what was going to happen next.

Can we just gush about Gabriel for a minute? This is also something the author did an amazing job with and I say this because in the beginning his character came off as dark and mysterious which I love thats my kind of guy so naturally I fell for Gabriel as soon as I met him. Then there were these gushy moments with him and Mia that made me absolutely fall for him all over again but those moments would be over within seconds and Gabriel would do something to make me absolutely want to punch him in the face. But I say that the author did this well because she made so many emotions towards Gabriel come out and you know you have a good writer on your hands when they make you love hate and then repeat the love hate for a character all in one book.

I definitely plan to read more of Elisa Nader’s books if she happens to write more because I loved this one and I wouldn’t hesitate to pick it up again if I was one to reread books. I would recommend this to anyone who likes dystopian because although its not full on dystopian there are many dystopian factors and I promise you will fall in love with it.

Review: Unfed by Kirsty McKay

Unfed by Kirsty McKay
Publisher: Chicken House
Release Date: August 27, 2013
Book Format: ARC
Number of Pages: 288
Synopsis: Fresh meat! From a hospital of horrors to a runaway zombie train, it's an all-new onslaught of the slavering undead in the sequel to Kirsty McKay's killer debut!

Just when you think you're out...it's the morning after the night of the return of the living dead. Or something like that. After running/bus-driving/snowboarding for her life alongside rebel Smitty, geeky Pete, and popular Alice, Bobby thought she'd found the antidote to the Carrot Man Veggie Juice that had turned the rest of their classmates into zombies. When Smitty (mmm...nom, nom) got chomped, Bobby pumped a syringe full of it into him herself.

But now Bobby's a prisoner in some hospital of horrors, with no clue how she got there. And Smitty is missing. What if he isn't cured after all? Bobby knows she's got to find him, even if it means facing Scotland's hungry hordes -- plus Alice's buckets of snark -- again. And this time, zombies aren't the only evil stressing her out. The brain-dead are bad enough, but how can Bobby stop the big pharma business behind the epidemic? Especially when her own mom works for the company?

My Review:
I received Unfed by Kirsty McKay from the publisher, and this is my honest review.

Unfed is the fast paced crazy sequel to Undead by Kirsty McKay. These books are about  a group of students who are forced to put up with zombies who happen to be all over the place. They have to rely on each other and keep on their feet to stay alive.

The book starts off with out main character Robert A.K.A. Bobby who wakes up in a strange place. Turns out she is in a “safe” hospital where she will be well taken care of. She soon finds out that this is not the case and she’s off to find her friends. I like Bobby’s character because she is very brave. I mean come on she goes through a good chunk of the book in just her underwear, how is that not brave?

Along the way she meets up with Alice the famous “mean girl” from the first book. You’d think that all this craziness would mellow a girl like Alice out but no she’s just as (excuse my french) bitchy as before but thats okay because every book needs an annoying mean girl right? Next up the girls are reunited with Pete and a new character Russ. Pete is still as nerdy as before, his character is very important to the story because without him they wouldn’t have figured out a lot of the things they needed to survive. Now Russ in the beginning it seemed like he liked Alice so I was like cool maybe she’ll loosen up a bit. But then he started getting friendlier to Bobby as well. (Now that I’ve finished the book I understand why) But because of this I was not too trusting with Russ throughout the book for pretty good reasons.

Nevertheless these three work well together to find their way to the lovely Smitty, whom I missed so so much! He made me smile so much with all his quirky remarks it was awesome! Anyways you can tell how much I love this character just by the little rant above.

Zombies are such an awesome topic to write a book about because theres no room for bland boringness. This whole book was action packed and very fast paced. There was never a dull moment. Especially when Smitty was involved! With the end I’m thinking there is going to be a third book, Let me rephrase that I’m hoping there is going to be a third book because I’m too in love with the characters to let go.

Oh, my! Dystopia at its finest! A quick word on Stitch (book 1): It had been a while since I'd read what it was about so I just started reading. It seemed like a nice time travel romance with a hint of something else and then BAM!, in came the dystopia element. At that point, I couldn't put it down...
- Fundinmental - Painstakingly Plotted World
The complexity of the plot and the dynamics have you wondering what exactly Samantha has in her mind to be able to imagine this complex world. I absolutely LOVE LOVED this book. It was one of those books that I picked up and didn't want to set back down even after it was finished.
Sept. 1 - The Book Rogue - Review
Some things were not that unusual for a Dystopian, but there were also some shocking aspects -- in the regard that I don't find them too absurd to actually happen, like right now. Genius and insanity are utterly and truly a very fine line that tends to blur a lot.
