Lawyers, Lovers, and Lies Tour: Author Interview

Lawyers Lovers & Lies by Linda Pohl
Synopsis: Charlene Williams, a recent law school graduate, thinks her prayers have been answered when she is offered a position at one of New York City's most prestigious law firms. But her dreams are quickly shattered when she finds out that Alex Andrews, the firm's senior criminal lawyer, wants far more from her than her legal expertise.

A gorgeous, powerful, manipulative man, Alexander is used to getting whatever he wants. Targeted as his next conquest, his words and actions make it quite clear that if Charlene doesn't start playing by his rules, she'll be lucky to be licking stamps in some lowly legal aid office.

With no witnesses to substantiate Alex's escalating abuse, it's his word against hers. Consumed with fear and the possibility of losing her job, Charlene is faced with a choice to retreat or to meet this ultimate challenge head on. Risking everything, she decides to build the greatest case of her life in an attempt to expose Alex as the predator he is.

Interview:

P:  What do you like to do when you're not writing?
L: When I'm not writing, I enjoy keeping busy. I love my part time job and have been doing it for nearly fourteen years. I work as a standardized patient at a medical school near my home. I memorize scripts and then go into one of twelve simulated doctor's offices. Medical students in years one through four are given my "door chart" and then I role play the illness or ailment. I have played a depressed woman, had thyroid disease, been a victim of domestic abuse (the bruises on my eye, arm and rib look real), had cancer, gallstones, appendicitis and a myriad of other diseases. Sometimes I rotate among the first year classrooms to introduce the students to the proper way of taking a history from a patient. I have also played the "difficult" patient, including the tearful patient, the curious patient, the seductive patient and the rambling patient. When I'm not working, I love reading and traveling. With two nieces in Switzerland, I am looking forward to going to my one niece's wedding next summer. My greatest joy is probably my two new grandsons, born only 2 months apart. Aiden is 10 months and Jacob (Jack) is 8 months. I love spending time with them.

P: What is the one moment that has changed your life?
L: When my younger sister died of cancer, leaving behind her three and four year old daughters, my world was turned upside down. For a long time after she died, I thought very frequently about the fragility of life and how fortunate I was to have my health. I questioned why she was taken and vowed to never take anything for granted. The years passed and I was fortunate to have my health. Sometimes, I was probably not as grateful as I feel I should have been. Then, on September 28, my son-in-law, a healthy, strong young man was diagnosed with acute leukemia. His only symptoms were that he felt unusually tired, but he and my daughter attributed that to caring for a new baby and his starting a new job. Nose bleeds weren't anything new, as he has always had bad allergies and sinus infections that were frequently accompanied by nose bleeds. Presuming he had another sinus infection, he saw the doctor who prescribed antibiotics. When the antibiotics ended, and he felt no better, the doctor took a blood test and we received the most dreaded news, cancer. He was ambulanced to a cancer center and completed his first round of chemotherapy, which unfortunately did not eliminate the cancer cells in his bone marrow. He is in the hospital now receiving his second round of chemo and we are praying that it works. The only positive thing is that we have moved into our daughter's home and are caring for her baby and really getting to know our beautiful little grandson, Jacob. I pray that his daddy gets better. Again, I find myself thinking about life and how precious it is. In the blink of an eye, everything can change.

P: How long does it take you to write a book?
L: It depends on the book. Years ago, I had my own literacy program where I visited hundreds of schools to promote a love of reading. I called myself The Storybook Princess and I dressed up in a Cinderella gown, glittery shoes, a jeweled crown, and a sparkly eye mask. I visited preschool through Grade 2. In conjunction with my program, I wrote The Ah-Chooo Book and The Grumpy Queen. Each of those books took me a few months to write, but the illustrators took a longer time. The Ah-Chooo is in audio, with me reading, on itunes. My non-fiction book, which I co-authored with reproductive endocrinologist Dr. Masood Khatamee is entitled Doctor, Are You Listening? It took me over two years of working diligently with the doctor to collaborate on the topics we discussed and wanted to include in the book. I worked on Lawyers, Lovers and Lies for 3 years, often writing and rewriting chapters. There was always something I wanted to change or add. I'm happiest when I'm writing and my characters become real to me. I really couldn't stand Alex, but he often "spoke" to me and then I wasn't happy till I'd get my thoughts down on paper. I'm just about finished withmy next book entitled A Will For Revenge. That book has been in the works for several years.

P: Where do you get your ideas or inspirations?
L: I used to be a first grade teacher and it seemed I was constantly reminding the children to cover their noses and mouths when they sneezed. If they did remember to cover their noses and mouths, then I would have to remind them to please wash their hands. I got tired of hearing myself talk and thus was born The Ah-Chooo Book! Although most of the children I taught were happy, one little girl, named Donna, always had a a glum look on her little face. And so, even though she never knew that she was my inspiration for The Grumpy Queen, she was! It teaches children that if you wear a smile and are happy, those around you will be happy. Smiles are contagious! Doctor, Are You Listening? was written to help make women aware of their choices when seeing a physician and also to empower women at their doctors' visits. Lawyers, Lovers and Lies was inspired by my imagination. That my husband worked in a big law firm probably had something to with my choosing to write about lawyers! The book I'm working on now, A Will For Revenge, was inspired by my father's first wife. But, since it's fiction, I got to create a more favorable ending! I guess it would be fair to say that my ideas come from life and I'm always thinking about a new idea. One of my children's books that is presently having the illustrations done is entitled Aurelie's Magical Crepes. When my husband and I were out to dinner, sitting at the next table there was a rather stout, crotchety looking old woman with her hair pulled back tautly into a chignon. I looked at my husband and said, "There is Madame Bougon!" In French, bougon means grumpy and it perfectly suited her! The young man doing my illustrations has captured her look perfectly. I guess ideas can come from anywhere, if you're open to looking for them.

P: Who is your favorite author and why?
L: I love to read and enjoy books of various genres. One of my favorite authors is Naomi Ragen. Her books transport me to a different culture. I enjoy learning the rituals and traditions that other people follow. She makes you feel as if you are really a part of the lives of those she is writing about. I love her storylines and character development. Usually, her novels are thought provoking and, once I start, I find her books difficult to put down. I also really enjoy books about the Amish culture and love to read anything I can about that way of life.

P: What book do I read over and over again?
L: I have read To Kill A Mockingbird many times. I never tire of the storyline or the characters. It is my all time favorite!

I hope you all enjoyed the interview with Linda! and I hope to have her back in the future after I've read her book :)

Review: A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness

A Monster Calls
by Patrick Ness
Publisher: Walker Books
Publication Date: September 27, 2011
Book Format: Hardcover
Number of Pages: 215
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I checked out A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness from my local library for the purpose of reviewing it on my blog.

I picked this book up at my own risk. I knew when I started it that everyone whose read it have balled there eyes out and that’s what I was prepared to do. So I was a little astonished when I finished this book without shedding a single tear. But don’t fret, just because I didn’t cry doesn’t mean I didn’t love this book!

A Monster Calls is about a boy named Conor who lives in I think England? I think but I’m not sure with his mom. The twist is that his parents are divorced which means it’s just him and his mother, and the bad part his mother has cancer. I know it sounds like something some people would cry about but I just didn’t feel the need to cry. I’m not sure why.

Yes I definitely felt bad for Conor at parts because I mean who wouldn’t? His mother has cancer and he’s having to deal with basically being alone and being bullied at school. But for a boy his age I think he handled it very well considering he was on his own.

One of the things I enjoyed about the book was the three tales that the monster told. At first when the monster told Conor about the stories I was a little skeptical about them. I thought they were going to be a little boring but I actually enjoyed them!

Let’s talk about some of the characters shall we? His grandmother, really how rude could you be to a 13 year old who is losing his mother to cancer. It’s your grandson and he’s losing his mother and your being so rude and hard on him? I mean really?! And them his father. Who doesn’t ever see him because of where he lives and then comes back for two seconds and then leave again. Those were a couple of reasons I felt bad for him. You’ll find out more once you read the book!

Overall this gets a 5 out of 5 stars because it kept me interested and I loved all of the illustrations in the book!

My Figure Skating Addiction

Many people ask me how I became such a big fan of figure skating. There aren’t any ice rinks near my city, and I’ve only stepped on the ice once in my life! I grew up watching every skating event on TV, but it wasn’t until I attended my first competition that my fandom turned into an addiction.

My addiction started innocently enough. A friend from college, who is also a die-hard fan of the sport, happened to be in Cleveland during the 2000 U.S. National Championships, and she called me from Gund Arena, so excited about everything she saw. She said we absolutely had to go to Boston for the 2001 Championships. I'd always loved watching Nationals on TV, but I was thinking, who really goes to those events?

My friend brought me the ticket order form, and before I knew it, we'd plunked down a few hundred dollars for All-Event tickets. I flew into snow-covered Boston in January 2001 and had no idea what I was getting into, how many different places I'd travel to during the next eleven years for competitions.

The first thing that jumped out at me in Boston was how the skaters I'd watched for years on TV were now walking all around me at the hotel and sitting next to me on the bus to the arena. I was completely star struck! I didn't know where to look first.

The next thing that blew me away was how bright and sparkly the costumes were in person. Remember, this was before HDTV became popular. When the first group of skaters came out on the ice, I felt like I was in that scene in The Wizard of Oz, when Dorothy steps out of the black and white wrecked house and into colorful Munchkin Land. I couldn't believe how every sequin glinted under the bright lights of the Fleet Center.

Watching the competition live as opposed to at home, I could really feel the emotion of the skaters, and the energy of the crowd heightened the excitement even more. I enjoyed seeing skaters that never made the TV broadcast, especially the young up-and-comers. But the highlight was seeing my favorite skater of all-time, Michelle Kwan, compete. She owned the building. Nothing could compare to the frenzy she created when she stepped on the ice. Watching her skate was such a privilege.

After I returned home and told my sister all about my experience, I didn't have to do much convincing to get her on board for 2002 Nationals in Los Angeles. And from there, I couldn't stop – 2003 Dallas, 2004 Atlanta, 2005 Portland, the list goes on. Twelve straight Nationals and tickets purchased for 2013 in Omaha. Along the way, I also added in Skate America as an annual trip and threw in Worlds '09 and the 2010 Olympics (which was a dream come true!).

Attending skating events has allowed me to visit cities I never would've visited, and I've met some amazing skaters, skater families, and fans over the years. Being at competitions is so inspiring – it’s not only made me a bigger fan but it’s also given me lots of story ideas. So, I think my addiction is a healthy one! Do you have any healthy addictions?

I hope you all enjoyed Jennifer's Guest Post! It was very fun to have her on the blog today! Don't forget to check out the tour page so you can find the other stops on the tour!

One Pink Line Tour: Review

One Pink Line by Dina Silver
Synopsis: Can the love of a lifetime be forever changed by one pink line? Dina Silver’s tender, absorbing novel, One Pink Line, is the warmhearted, wry story of love, loss and family, as seen through the prism of one singular, spirited young couple who find themselves in a predicament that changes the course of their lives, and those closest to them. With heart, humor and compassion, this debut work of women’s fiction is certain to stir anyone who relishes a good laugh, can stand a good cry, and, above all believes in the redemptive power of love.

This unique, contemporary story gives readers a dual perspective. Sydney Shephard, a sweet-tempered, strong-natured college senior is young, in love with an exceptional man, and unexpectedly pregnant. Faced with a child she never planned for, she is forced to relay this news to her neurotic mother, relinquish her youth, and risk losing the love of her life. Then there’s Grace, a daughter, who believed she was a product of this great love, grows to realize her existence is not what she assumed, and is left with profound and puzzling questions about who she really is.

Spanning generations and every imaginable emotion, One Pink Line reveals how two points of view can be dramatically at odds, and perhaps ultimately reconciled. Simultaneously deeply felt and lighthearted, One Pink Line deftly mines how the choices we make are able to alter so many lives, and how doing the right thing and living honestly can bring unexpected, hard-won happiness. It’s a must-read for anyone who relishes a great love story, absorbing characters, and plenty of laughs along the way.

Want to check out the book?

My Review:

One Pink Line by Dina Silver is about a young lady named Sydney who is in college getting ready for finals and one night while cramming for a final she discovers that she is pregnant. The problem is she is not pregnant with her boyfriends baby. Pulls you in right? I know that was just the first chapter and I was loving the book already.

Something that’s really different about this book is that it starts with Sydney in college but then it goes into the past which is about 3 or 4 years before this moment and tells us what happens from then until the point where we started. To mix it up a little bit though Silver throws in chapters every once in awhile that are in the future, and there in a different point of view. But I can’t tell you who’s point of view those chapters are in because it would be a huge spoiler alert but I promise who Silver puts this book together is so interesting!
I was so jealous of Sydney because Ethan, her love interest during the book was such an amazing guy and I loved him just as much as Sydney did. The reason being because no matter what happened in their relationship he was willing to forgive her and he still loved her. Now in some cases this could be a real problem because you’ll probably end up getting used but Ethan really loved Sydney and he knew she was a good person who just made one stupid mistake, which is a big reason why I loved him too!

Sydney also has a really supportive sister named Kendra who is basically Syd’s rock she sticks up for her when it comes to her mother, and she even stands by her during her struggles with being pregnant and having to raise the baby basically on her own. I wish I had a sister like this, well I wish I had a sister overall but I guess I’ll just have to stick with my brother!

Anyways this book gets a 5 out of 5 stars because the plot was amazing I could not put the book down and I was sitting on the edge of my seat the whole time I was reading. I can’t wait to see if Dina Silver plans to write more books in the future because I will definitely read them!

Thanks so much for stopping by today to read my review everybody! I loved this book and everything about it so I hope you all will too! Be sure to check out the tour page after you leave here so that you can check out the host and the other stops on the tour! P.S. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Review: Speechless by Hannah Harrington

Speechless by Hannah Harrington
Publisher:
Publication Date:
Number of Pages:
Book Format:
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Synopsis: Everyone knows that Chelsea Knot can't keep a secret

Until now. Because the last secret she shared turned her into a social outcast—and nearly got someone killed.

Now Chelsea has taken a vow of silence—to learn to keep her mouth shut, and to stop hurting anyone else. And if she thinks keeping secrets is hard, not speaking up when she's ignored, ridiculed and even attacked is worse.

But there's strength in silence, and in the new friends who are, shockingly, coming her way—people she never noticed before; a boy she might even fall for. If only her new friends can forgive what she's done. If only she can forgive herself.

My Review:

I won Speechless from a giveaway for my honest review.

This is not the first book I’ve read by Hannah Harrington and it certainly wont be the last. I’m pretty sure I’ve fallen in love with her work. Her first book Saving June? Loved it. Her second book Speechless? In love with it! Speechless is about a girl named Chelsea who is a sophomore in high school and she loves to leak secrets. One day though she leaks the wrong secret and one of her class mates almost dies. This changes Chelsea’s life forever.

I was a little afraid to pick this book up when I got it because I thought it might be a little depressing and I’m definitely not in the mood for something depressing, but it wasn’t at all which I was very relieved about. To start off I had a little bit of a hard time sympathizing for Chelsea when her life went down the drain because I know girls like her and I hate all of them. But there are some things that are different about her and what she did which made me like her in the end.

One of the reasons I really enjoyed this book was that it was so real. The reason I say that is because things like what happened in this book happen all over the world everyday and some people don’t even realize how horrible it is. People who read this book will be given a new light on the certain situation in the book and it will probably open their eyes to things around them. It definitely has for me.

The other thing I loved is how well Harrington integrates love and friendship with this problem in the book. It really is great that she can do that so well because without it the book would have been boring. With the love and the friendship there’s parts in the book when your laughing or your just thinking “awe” pretty great right?

Sam… can we just talk about Sam please? I can’t really tell you who he is because it will giveaway major spoilers but let me tell you he is the best book guy I’ve met so far and I so want a guy like Sam for myself! He has so many good qualities. Like he’s a nerd but a skater boy great mix. He can cook and he’s pretty sweet and caring too! Now don’t we all need someone like that in our life? I think so.

In the end I give this book a solid 5 out of 5 stars. I’ll totally being thinking about this for years to come especially every time I see a book by Hannah Harrington I’ll always pick her books up because they’ll bring me back to the days I was reading Speechless

Why am I waiting for this book? I'm waiting for this book because I read an arc of Glitch (which is the first book review here) and I loved it! Which means I need to know what happens next!

Stealing Breath Tour: Author Interview

Stealing Breath by Joanne Brothwell
Synopsis: Deep in the backwoods of North Dakota, twenty-one year old Sarah Ross is searching for a missing child when she is attacked by a glowing-eyed, transparent... creature. Sarah survives, destroying the monster by using mysterious abilities she didn't even know she had. Bloody and bruised, Sarah flees the scene and runs directly into Evan Valente, a handsome, charismatic stranger who helps her back to safety. But what is Evan doing out in the forest at five in the morning? Turning to a healer, Sarah is shocked to learn her eyes bear the mark of the Indigo Child-an evolved human with the ability to feel the emotions of others. But her indigo aura also makes her an easy target for those who wish to consume her powerful essence. Soon, Sarah is falling deeply in love with Evan and wants nothing more than to follow her heart and trust that he is the man he says he is. But she can't ignore the lingering feeling that Evan is hiding a terrible secret. The deeper she digs, the more danger she faces, leading her on a course that will force her to face the darkest, innermost parts of her soul.

Author Interview:

P: How long have you wanted to be an author?
J: I suppose I`ve wanted to be an author ever since I was a child. I always dreamed of writing
adventure stories similar to my then-favourite series, Katie John.

P: What is your favorite genre to write?
J: I love Paranormal. I just finished a science fiction book, but I`m already starting to think
paranormal for my next WIP.

P: What kind of advice would you give aspiriing writers?
J: Persistence and tenacity is the
only difference between published and unpublished writers.

P: Which was your favorite character to write?
J: I really love Evan. His character was
fascinating to write because he’s the classic tortured hero; complicated past, haunting inner
demons, but at the core of his person, Evan is good, loyal and sweet.

P: What can we expect from you in the future?
J: Silencing Breath, the sequel to Stealing Breath, is slated for publication in March, 2013. The
third in the series will be following. I`ve also finished The Eve Genome, a science fiction fantasy
novel that I will be shopping around soon.

I hope you all enjoyed the interview and the book blurb above! Don't forget the tour is hosted by These Paper Worlds so be sure to stop by there soon, to check out this tour and the others that are going on in the future!

Purely by accident, they have awakened its powers and opened a portal to Sagaas, land of ancient gods.

Before the siblings can comprehend what has happened, the Serpent’s Ring is wrenched from Evan’s hand by an enormous bird and flown back to Aegir, the Norse god of the sea. Evan and Claire, accompanied by a band of unlikely heroes, must retrieve the Serpent’s Ring before Aegir uses its immense powers to flood all the lands on Earth.
